Something to smile about

Pandemic, war, global heating, floods – hands up who’s feeling positive? It’s hardly surprising that welfare organisations are reporting much higher levels of mental distress.

Happiness can be frustratingly elusive. Its presence or absence motivates research across a wide range of disciplines far beyond psychology – from urban design, to finance and health.

But there’s one moment that brings it all together and that’s the International Day of Happiness, established by the United Nations General Assembly on 28 June 2012.

This year the Day of Happiness is being celebrated on 20 March. You or people you care about can sign up free for:

  • 10 days of free happiness coaching via email or SMS
  • regular webinars
  • daily inspiration via an app.

Organisers, Action for Happiness, are encouraging people to share what they’re doing to help create a happier world by using the hashtag #InternationalDayOfHappiness.

The 2022 edition of the annual World Happiness Report, edited by Professor John F Helliwell of the University of British Columbia and others, will be published on 20 March.

Last year, Australia ranked 11th on the global scale.
